Cirque du Soleil, the renowned experimental and performing art circus will be presenting its spectacular show, Amaluna this December and January in Miami, Florida. One day, a group of young men arrives on the island and an emotionally epic love story begins. Majority of Cirque du Soleil’s shows are kid-friendly and Amaluna is one of them. There may be moments of darkness and loud noises that may frighten them so little preparedness for the little ones. Come along, bring your family and friends, and watch the magic unfold together.

Cirque du Soleil, translated into “Circus of the Sun,” is a Canadian entertainment company. Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and founded by Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix in 1984, is the largest theatrical producer in the world.

Amaluna is one of their touring shows, which began in 2012 and is loosely inspired by William Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. The title is a combination of two words. The word “Ama” means mother in a number of world languages, and “luna” which means moon. The moon is usually viewed as a symbol of femininity which evokes a mother-daughter relationship as well as a concept of the moon being a goddess and protector of the planet Earth. It is also the name of the island the story takes place in.

The story is set on an island which is ruled by goddesses and cycles of the moon. The queen, Prospera, is directing her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony, which honors and celebrates rebirth, renewal, femininity, and balance. This is a ceremony that has been performed from one generation to the next to ensure the passing down of these values and insights. On this day as part of the ceremony, Prospera causes a great storm and suddenly a group of men are washed up along the shore. Upon discovery, the queen’s daughter falls in love with one of the young men and the two face many trials and setbacks for the sake of their love, faith, mutual trust, and harmony. These trials and setbacks become the storyline’s driving force for the entire production.
