MetroRail

The Metrorail system is a 25-mile dual track, elevated rapid transit system that provides service to Miami International Airport (MIA) and runs from Kendall through South Miami, Coral Gables, and downtown Miami; to the Civic Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital area; and to Brownsville, Liberty City, Hialeah, and Medley in northwest Miami-Dade, with connections to Broward and Palm Beach counties at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station. The system currently uses 136 train cars.

The 23 accessible Metrorail stations are about one mile apart, providing easy access for bus riders, pedestrians, and passengers who are dropped off and picked up.

Metrobus

The Metrobus offers transportation in Miami and around the Miami-Dade County, from Miami Beach to the western half of the county and from the Middle Keys to Broward Boulevard. The Metrobus offers over ninety routes using over 800 buses and connects to the Metrorail and Metromover. All buses are wheelchair accessible.

Access and Parking
The green signs along the Metrobus route mark the bus stops. As each bus arrives at the stop, the name or number of the final destination will be announced. The bus windshield also lists the destination. Short routes are specified with a letter in addition to the route number. Please allow disabled passengers to exit or board first. Priority seating, reserved for senior citizens and those with disabilities, is the first two seats facing forward. Signify your stop by pulling the cord, or in some busses by pressing the stop button or tape, at least one block before your stop. Try to exit using the rear doors to allow oncoming passengers on board through the main doors.

You can park and ride the Miami public transit system for free at any of the following terminals: West Kendall Transit Terminal, Kendall Drive and SW 150 Ave, Busway – SW 152 St., Busway – SW 168 St., Busway – SW 112 Ave., Busway – SW 244 St., Coral Reef Drive/Florida’s Turnpike, Hammocks Town Center, Golden Glades, and Miami Gardens Drive Park and Ride.  .

Hours of Operation
The Metrobus schedule varies by route and day. Several buses run 24-hours per day and three of the buses offer overnight transportation.  Bus schedules, a trip planner, transit tracker, and directions can all be found on the Miami-Dade website.

Fares
The Metrobus costs $2.00 per trip. You can pay by EASY Card or EASY ticket, available through one of the many vending machines at the entrance of the Metrorail station. Free bus-to-bus and bus-to-rail transfers are available when you use your EASY Card or Ticket if used within three hours of your initial card or ticket use. You can pay with cash, but change cannot be given. Paper transfers are not available, and each trip must be paid separately when paying cash.

As far as transportation in Miami goes, the Metromover is the best deal! The line has an inner loop (Omni) and outer loop (Brickell), which both run all week from 5:00 AM until midnight. Maps for the Metromover are located near the entrance to each station and on the Miami-Dade website. Once on the station, listen for the beep that announces the arrival of a new train. Wait for the passengers to exit the train before entering. Hold on to a pole or handrail to help you balance. The seats are for disabled individuals and senior citizens only. As the Metromover nears each station, its name will be announced, so know where your exit point will be in advance. Use the stairs, elevator, or escalator to reach street level.

Disabled Parking
The tactile tiles are to alert the visually impaired to be aware that the platform edge is near. Priority seats, located at each end of the car, are available for the handicapped or senior citizens. If a disabled individual finds an elevator that is in not working properly, he can use the red box to request back up accessible service.

Hours of Operation
The Metromover inner loop and the outer loop (Omni and Brickell) run from 5 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Trains arrive frequently. The schedule may change for special events. The trains run every 90 seconds during rush hour and every three minutes at other times throughout the day.

The Metrorail
To transfer to the Metrorail, exit at either Brickell Station or Government Center Station and follow the signs to the gates with the special Metrorail/Metromover fares.

Rules
As the Metromover moves quickly around the city and to the best Miami beach accommodations, there are certain rules passengers must follow:

  • Always hold on.
  • No running in the station.
  • Children must always hold an adult’s hand.
  • Stand clear of the platform edge.
  • Enter the guideway is prohibited.
  • Rollerblading, skating, and skateboarding are not permitted in the rail stations.
  • If you drop something on the tracks, do not try to retrieve it yourself. Contact a staff member or use the telephone at the security officer’s booth to get help.
